How to Remove Oil Base Paint Stains

Step 1: Make your Dawn-Water solution. Pour the warm water into a spray bottle or container. Add 1/4 teaspoon of Dawn dishwashing detergent. Stir or gently shake to ensure a thorough mixture.

Step 2: Carefully remove any dried paint using a dull knife or the edge of a spoon.

Step 3: Place some isopropyl rubbing alcohol to a white clean cloth and blot the rubbing alcohol onto the stain. Continue doing this until you no longer get any color transfer on your cloth. Avoid using too much alcohol since you do not want it to penetrate to the backing, since it can destroy the bond.

NorCal Pro Tip: Blot the stain in one direction starting from the edge of the stain working your way to the center. This will prevent spreading the stain onto other carpet fibers.

Step 4: Use a dull knife or spoon again to scrape away any remaining paint. Do not use too much force or friction, this can damage the carpet fiber.

Step 5: Clean away the rubbing alcohol with a Dawn-Water solution. Blot the detergent onto the stained area by saturating a clean white cloth. Blot in a single direction.

Step 6: Spray water on to the damp are to rinse away the detergent. Do not over saturate the carpet. Use plain white paper towels to blot the area to remove as mush excess moisture as you can. S

tep 7: Once all the excess moisture has been removed, layer several paper towels onto the dampened area. Place a small heavy object on the layered paper towels for 2-4 hours. This will draw out any remaining moisture.

Step 8: Vacuum the area to restore the carpet’s resiliency.
