How to Remove Red Wine

Step 1: Dilute the stain with a bit of white wine. This will help dilute the color of the wine. If you don’t have any white wine you can make a Vinegar-Water solution. Pour 1 cup of white wine vinegar and 1 cup of water into a spray bottle or container. Stir or gently shake to ensure a thorough mixture. Spray the stain to dilute its color.

Step 2: Dampen a sponge with cold water and lightly blot the stain. This will soak up the top layer and color. Do not press hard on the stain or cause any friction. This will push the stain into the carpet fibers. Continue to lightly blot the stain until you no longer remove any color.

Step 3: Pour salt onto the stain…a lot of salt. You want enough salt to thoroughly soak up the stain. Once you poured a generous amount of salt on the stain leave it overnight or at least 10 hours.

Step 4: Scoop up the excess salt and vacuum what you couldn’t remove. To get rid of the salt residue from the carpet, dampen a clean white cloth with cold water and blot the area. Blot the dampened area with plain white paper towels. Vacuum to restore the carpet’s resiliency.

Step 5: If the stain remains, spray the area with the vinegar-water solution. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the stain has been removed.
