How to Remove Water Base Paint Stains
Step 1:
For wet stains: Blot the water based paint as quickly as possible to reduce the spreading of the
stain. Continue to blot the stain until no more color is transferring to the cloth.
For dry stains: Make an Ammonia-Water solution by placing 6 ounces of water into a spray
bottle and a tablespoon of ammonia into a spray bottle or container. Stir or gently shake to
ensure a thorough mixture. Apply the Ammonia-Water solution to a clean white cloth and blot
the solution into the stain. Use another clean white cloth to blot at the stain to soak up the
paint color. Continue to blot the stain until no more color is transferring to the cloth.
Step 2:
Make a Dawn-Water Solution to remove the remaining color from a wet stain and to remove the
Ammonia-Water solution from the dried stain. Add the Dawn-Water solution to a clean white
cloth and blot the solution into the stain.
NorCal Pro Tip: Blot the stain in one direction starting from the edge of the stain working your way to the center. This will prevent spreading the stain onto other carpet fibers.
Step 3:
Rinse the detergent out of the carpet by spraying water into the damp area. Be careful not to
oversaturate the carpet. Use plain white paper towels to blot the excess moisture out of the
carpet.
Step 4:
Once all the excess moisture has been removed, place several layers of paper towels onto the
damp area. Place a small heavy object onto the paper towels for 2-4 hours. This will draw out
any remaining moisture left in the carpet.
Step 5:
Once completely dry, vacuum the area to restore the carpet’s resiliency.
